A slightly windy and initially a dull day on arrival at Holme Dunes, which improved with the sun shining as the day progressed.
Assistant Warden and former group volunteer, Tori, instructed us to cut back Buckthorn on the North facing dune near Gore Point.
Warden Gary would spray the cut stumps to reduce return of the Buckthorn. Cuttings were collected and taken to a more sheltered area to burn.
Sheltered in the dunes, volunteers had lunch near the offices in a sheltered area, well warmed by the sun.
After sustenance, they visited the hide and spotted redshank, Greenshank, Godwit, Shoveler Duck, Teal, Shelduck.
A flight of a dozen Curlew flew in and a snipe picking in the mud very close to the hide as well as a Marsh Harrier flying and in the distance a Chinese Water Deer.

Holme Dunes are looking for beach volunteers over summer to liaise with the public and help protect beach nesting birds.They will work alongside a warden for 4 hours (10am-2pm) whenever they can on a regular basis from April – September.
There will be Open Days on 19th/20th March where people can get more information and see if it suits them.
